Alma Black

GIBBON

 

Alma Black, 100, of Gibbon, died Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Franklin.  Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gibbon with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Michael Gorte will be officiating.  Visitation will be from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday.  Minnesota Valley Funeral Home of Gibbon is in charge of the arrangements. 

Alma Clara Black was born December 25, 1909 in her family home on their farm in Severance Township, Sibley County  to Robert and Helen (Kiecker) Black.   Alma was baptized on January 9, 1910 at Immanuel Lutheran church by Pastor Henry Boettcher.  She was confirmed on March 25, 1923 at Immanuel Lutheran church by Pastor Henry Boettcher.  Alma attended country school in rural Moltke Township, Emanuel Lutheran School in Wellington Township, rural Fairfax and Immanuel Lutheran School in Gibbon.  Alma was a lifetime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Growing up, Alma helped her family on their farm.  She enjoyed being with her family and friends, going to dances and get togethers with her friends, including the many dances and gatherings  held in the Black family home.  She learned to drive a car at age 12 and drove into her mid 90’s.   As a young woman Alma moved to Minneapolis becoming a nanny and doing housework.  She was then employed by the Hotel Del Otero, working in the hotel’s restaurant. During World War II, Alma supported her country by going to work at Twin City Ordinance Plant and Honeywell which produce military equipment.  After her father’s death, in 1945, Alma moved back to Gibbon, caring for her mother and later her sister Emma.  While in Gibbon, she did babysitting for families, including the Bullemer children .  Alma worked in the produce department at Bullemer’s Grocery store from 1958 until her retirement in 1977.  In retirement Alma enjoyed family gatherings, friends, the Minnesota Twins, playing cards and music –especially the old-time music of her nephews DeLloyd, Darwin and Ed-Vern.  

Alma is survived by her sister-in-law, Rose (Albert) Black; nephews, Elmer Hillmann,  DeLloyd Hillmann, Darwin Black, Ed-Vern Black, Clifford Black, Harold Kiecker, Marvin Kiecker, Arden Black, LeRoy Black, Larry Black, Wayne Black;  neices, Stella Roepke, Selma Maxwell, Marella Larson, Lorna Kocourek, Leona Johnson, Sylvia Wendt, Gladys Masik, Ordell Stewart, Berthel Lue Ahlrich, Sharon Gronau, Constance Woelfel;  many great, 2nd and 3rd great nieces and nephews.

Alma is preceded in death by her parents; sisters and their husbands, Emma and Theodore Hillmann, Alice and Erick Kiecker, Helen and Hillert Martens and Rose Black in infancy; brothers and their wives,  Henry and Adelia Black, Albert Black, Arthur and Ethel Black, Theodore and Bertha Black, Robert and Evelyn Black, Jr., Reinhold and Lenora Black.

Also preceding Alma in death are nephews and neices, Clarence Hillmann,  Loren Black, Marfield Black,  Milton Black, Gilbert Black,  Maynard Kiecker, LaVerna (Hillmann) Jenison, Edna (Hillmann) Buboltz, Erdine Kiecker, Eileen Black; great nephews and nieces,  Allan Hillmann, Cheryl (Black) Dummer, Gary Kocourek, Ed-Vern Black, Jr., Glen Black, Valorie Black, Lance Ahlrich and Allan Kalk who joined her in death; and several great-great nephews/nieces.
